It is part of the experience.

Who Should Choose the Char Dham Helicopter Tour?
Not everyone who books the helicopter Yatra is doing it for comfort. Most people choose it because the road route genuinely isn't a realistic option for them. Here are the main groups:
Senior Citizens (60+)
The Kedarnath trek is 16 km round trip at 3,583 metres. Even with ponies and palanquins, it involves hours of physical effort in thin air. For most pilgrims above 65, this is the helicopter Yatra or no Yatra at all. This package removes every physical barrier — pony service covers the short walk at Yamunotri, and all other temple access is within walking distance of the helipad.
NRI Pilgrims
Indians living abroad often plan their Char Dham Yatra around a 7 to 10 day India trip. 15 days on the road route isn't possible. The 6-day helicopter circuit fits within a short visit and doesn't require adjusting to Indian road travel after years away. NRI bookings typically come with specific requirements around food quality and communication — Udan Aviation handles both.
People with Health Conditions
Heart patients, those with controlled diabetes, or people recovering from surgery often want to complete the Yatra but can't risk the physical exertion of the road route. The helicopter Yatra is the medically safer option for most of these cases — but a doctor's clearance before booking is still necessary. Anyone with severe cardiac conditions, uncontrolled blood pressure, or active psychiatric disorders should not fly. See the health advisory section below.
Families with Young Children or Elderly Members
Managing a 70-year-old parent and two young children through 15 days of mountain roads and trekking is a logistical challenge. The helicopter route standardises the experience — predictable schedule, fixed hotels, meals included, ground support at every stop.
Anyone with Limited Time
Six days to complete one of Hinduism's most important pilgrimages. If you're a working professional, business owner, or anyone who can't take 15 days off — this is the only way the Char Dham Yatra fits into your calendar.
Why Do Char Dham by Helicopter?
- Time: 6 days instead of 12-15. The helicopter connects helipad to temple in minutes, not mountain-road hours.
- VIP Darshan at every temple: During peak season, queues at Kedarnath and Badrinath stretch 4 to 6 hours. The priority pass included in this package takes you directly to the sanctum.
- No high-altitude trekking: Only a short pony or Palki ride at Yamunotri. Senior citizens and people with physical limitations can complete the full Char Dham Yatra.
- Aerial view of the Himalayas: Kedarnath from above, the Bhagirathi valley, Mana Village from the air near Badrinath. Most road-route pilgrims never see these views.
Best Time for Char Dham Helicopter Yatra
| Season | Months | Weather | Crowd Level | Practical Notes |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Summer | April – June | Clear skies, cold mornings | High — especially May-June | Best flying visibility. Book 4-6 weeks in advance for summer dates. |
| Autumn | September – October | Cool, clear after monsoon | Moderate | Good conditions, shorter temple queues, slightly lower hotel rates. |
| Avoid | July – August | Monsoon — heavy rain | Very low | Helicopter ops often suspended. High landslide risk on all mountain routes. |
Late September and early October is a good window for anyone with flexibility — clear post-monsoon skies, green landscapes, and noticeably shorter Darshan queues at all four temples. Many repeat pilgrims specifically prefer this over the busier summer season.
Char Dham Opening Dates 2026
| Temple | Opens in 2026 |
|---|---|
| Yamunotri | 19 April 2026 |
| Gangotri | 19 April 2026 |
| Kedarnath | 22 April 2026 |
| Badrinath | 23 April 2026 |
Closing dates are announced by the Uttarakhand government closer to the season. Typically: Gangotri and Yamunotri close on Diwali, Kedarnath a few days after, Badrinath last — usually late November.
Which Helicopter Is Used for the Char Dham Heli Tour?
This is a question many pilgrims ask and most operators don't answer clearly.
The helicopters used for Char Dham Yatra operations in Uttarakhand are primarily the Bell 407 and Eurocopter AS350 B3 (Airbus H125) — both are single-engine turbine helicopters certified for high-altitude mountain operations. The AS350 B3 in particular is widely used at Kedarnath given its performance at altitudes above 3,500 metres.
| Model | Type | Capacity | Why Used on This Route |
|---|---|---|---|
| Eurocopter AS350 B3 (Airbus H125) | Single-engine turbine | Up to 6 passengers | High-altitude certified, operates well above 3,500m. Used at Kedarnath helipad. |
| Bell 407 | Single-engine turbine | Up to 6 passengers | Reliable mountain operations, good passenger comfort for longer legs. |
All helicopters operating on the Char Dham route are subject to mandatory maintenance checks before each flight season. Udan Aviation uses certified aircraft with pilots who have specific Uttarakhand mountain route clearances.
The specific helicopter assigned to your flight depends on operational availability on that day. Both models listed above are cleared for the full Char Dham circuit.
Starting Point — Sahastradhara Helipad, Dehradun
All Char Dham helicopter flights depart from Sahastradhara Helipad, Dehradun. This is the only government-designated departure base for Char Dham heli operations in Uttarakhand.
Getting to the helipad from major cities:
| Coming From | How to Reach Sahastradhara Helipad, Dehradun |
|---|---|
| Delhi | By road: NH58, approximately 5-6 hours. By train: Dehradun Express or Shatabdi from New Delhi to Dehradun railway station, then taxi (30 min). By air: Fly to Jolly Grant Airport, Dehradun — helipad is 25 km away. |
| Haridwar | By road or taxi: approximately 60 km, 1.5 to 2 hours. Udan Aviation can arrange pickup from Haridwar. |
| Rishikesh | By road or taxi: approximately 45 km, 1 to 1.5 hours. Udan Aviation can arrange pickup from Rishikesh. |
| Mumbai / Chennai / Bengaluru / Kolkata / Hyderabad | Fly to Jolly Grant Airport, Dehradun (direct flights or via Delhi). Taxi to Sahastradhara Helipad: 25 km, about 40 minutes. |
Whatever your origin city — reach Dehradun the evening before your departure day. Don't plan to travel on the morning of your flight. Early morning departures leave no room for travel delays.

Char Dham by Helicopter vs Char Dham by Road — Honest Comparison
| Parameter | By Helicopter | By Road |
|---|---|---|
| Total Duration | 6 Days | 12 to 15 Days |
| Cost Per Person | ₹ 2,30,000 (all inclusive) | ₹ 25,000 to ₹ 50,000 (varies widely by operator and hotel category) |
| Physical Effort | Minimal — pony at Yamunotri only | Significant — trekking at 3,500m+, long mountain drives |
| Suitable for 60+ pilgrims | Yes — designed for it | Depends on health and fitness level |
| Darshan Queue | VIP Priority — 15 to 30 minutes | Open queue — 4 to 6 hours in peak season |
| Kedarnath Trek | Not required — fly directly | 16 km round trip on foot, horse, or palanquin |
| Weather Dependency | Moderate — flights can be delayed | High — road closures, landslides, rain can disrupt for days |
| Time Off Needed | 6 days | 12 to 15 days minimum |
| Experience of the Himalayas | Aerial view — glacier and valley vistas | Ground-level mountain road driving, narrow roads |
| Best For | Senior citizens, NRIs, time-constrained, health conditions | Adventure seekers, those with time, budget-conscious pilgrims |
Neither option is objectively better — they serve different kinds of pilgrims. If you have the time, fitness, and budget for the road route, it's the traditional journey and has its own meaning. If any of those three factors is a constraint, the helicopter package is the only realistic path to completing the Yatra.

Health Advisory for Char Dham Helicopter Yatra
Even with helicopter access, you will be at altitudes between 3,100 and 3,583 metres for most of Days 2 through 5. Altitude affects everyone differently, and some pilgrims experience symptoms even on the helicopter route. Read this before you book.
Altitude Sickness — What to Watch For
Above 3,000 metres, some people experience headache, nausea, dizziness, shortness of breath, or loss of appetite. This is Acute Mountain Sickness (AMS). Symptoms usually develop 6 to 12 hours after arriving at altitude. At Kedarnath (3,583m) and Badrinath (3,133m), AMS is a real possibility, especially for first-time high-altitude visitors.
If you experience any of these symptoms during the Yatra, inform your Udan Aviation ground representative immediately. Do not try to push through it. The team has protocols for this.
Diamox (Acetazolamide) — Should You Take It?
Diamox is a prescription medication that helps prevent and reduce altitude sickness. If you've had altitude problems before or plan to visit high-altitude zones for the first time, discuss it with your doctor at least a week before travel. Do not self-medicate. Diamox has contraindications with certain conditions and medications.
Who Should Not Do This Yatra
- Anyone with severe, uncontrolled heart disease — consult a cardiologist before booking, not after
- Patients with severe COPD or active respiratory infection
- Anyone who has had a recent stroke or major surgery in the past 3 months
- Pregnant women beyond the first trimester
- Passengers with active psychiatric disorders
Who Can Do This Yatra with Precautions
- Controlled hypertension — cleared by doctor, carry medications, avoid physical exertion
- Type 2 diabetes (controlled) — carry sugar monitoring kit and snacks
- Mild cardiac conditions (stable angina, post-angioplasty with clearance) — doctor must confirm fitness for altitude travel
- Knee or joint problems — the helicopter route eliminates most trekking, but carry any prescribed support gear
Udan Aviation is not a medical service provider. The above is general guidance, not medical advice. Always get your doctor's clearance before booking if you have any chronic health condition.
The Four Dhams — Background
Yamunotri — 3,293 metres
Source of the River Yamuna. Goddess Yamuna is the eldest daughter of Surya Dev and twin sister of Yama. The temple was built in the 19th century by Maharani Guleria of Jaipur after the original structure was destroyed in an earthquake. The Surya Kund hot spring directly outside the temple — around 88°C — is where pilgrims cook rice wrapped in a cloth as an offering. The glacier origin of the Yamuna (Champasar Glacier) is 1 km above the temple at 4,421 metres — a separate trek not included in this package.
Gangotri — 3,100 metres
The Bhagirathi River flows from here before joining the Alaknanda to form the Ganga at Devprayag. King Bhagirath performed tapasya here for thousands of years to bring the Ganga to earth to liberate his ancestors — the river's name, Bhagirathi, comes from him. Gangotri Temple was built by Amar Singh Thapa in the early 1800s. The actual glacier origin (Gaumukh) is 19 km further up the valley and requires a separate trekking permit.
Kedarnath — 3,583 metres
One of the 12 Jyotirlingas — Lord Shiva's self-manifested sacred forms across India. The Pandavas are believed to have built the original temple, and Adi Shankaracharya rebuilt it in the 8th century. He is believed to have attained mahasamadhi in the cave directly behind the temple — this samadhi is open for darshan. The 2013 floods and landslides destroyed the entire surrounding area but the 1,000-year-old stone temple stood. The large boulder that appeared behind the temple during the disaster, widely believed to have shielded the structure, is visible today.
Badrinath — 3,133 metres
Dedicated to Lord Vishnu in his Badrinarayan form — meditating under a Badri (wild plum) tree. Adi Shankaracharya found the original idol submerged in the Alaknanda River and installed it in the temple in the 8th century. It is part of both the Char Dham and Panch Badri circuits, and one of the 108 Divya Desams. The Tapt Kund outside — a natural hot spring at around 45°C — is where pilgrims bathe before Darshan. Mana Village nearby is the last Indian settlement before the Tibet border and carries its own Mahabharata-era mythology.

Packing Tips for Char Dham Helicopter Tour
Your entire luggage on the helicopter is 5 kg in a soft duffel bag. Here's how to pack it well:
Clothing (most important category — don't underpack this):
- 2 sets of thermal innerwear — essential even in May and June at Kedarnath and Badrinath
- 1 fleece or woollen sweater
- 1 windproof/waterproof outer jacket — light but warm
- 2 sets of regular clothes for temple visits (comfortable, loose-fitting)
- 1 dupatta or head covering for temples
- Comfortable walking shoes with grip — not sandals
- 1 pair of warm socks
Health and Medicines (do not skip):
- Prescribed medications for any existing condition — carry extra supply
- Altitude sickness medication (Diamox if prescribed by doctor)
- Paracetamol, antacids, oral rehydration salts (ORS)
- Bandages and antiseptic cream — basic first aid
- Sunscreen SPF 50+ — UV is intense at high altitude
- Lip balm — air is very dry at 3,000+ metres
Essentials:
- Sufficient cash — ATMs are not available at Yamunotri, Gangotri, or Kedarnath. Badrinath has one ATM but it's frequently empty or out of service
- Power bank (10,000 mAh minimum) — charging points are scarce at most Dhams
- Water bottle — refill at hotels; avoid buying plastic at the Dhams
- Sunglasses — UV protection at altitude is necessary
- Small torch or headlamp for early morning temple visits
- Dry snacks — energy bars, nuts, dates — for the time between meals and during temple queues
- Jio or BSNL SIM card — other networks don't work reliably at Harsil and Badrinath
Documents (keep in a waterproof pouch or phone):
- Aadhaar Card (original) — mandatory
- PAN Card — mandatory
- Char Dham Yatra e-pass from registrationandtouristcare.uk.gov.in
- Udan Aviation e-ticket and booking confirmation
- Emergency contact numbers written on paper — phone batteries die
Leave your main suitcase at the Dehradun hotel. It's stored safely and returned to you when you come back on Day 6. Only the 5 kg duffel goes on the helicopter.
Dos and Don'ts
Do:
- Reach Sahastradhara Helipad 30 minutes before your ETD — not at ETD time
- Carry enough cash for all 6 days — plan on having Rs. 5,000 to Rs. 8,000 in cash beyond what the package covers
- Cover your head before entering every temple and remove footwear at the entrance
- Tell your Udan Aviation ground contact immediately if you feel breathless, dizzy, or unusually headachy — don't try to push through altitude symptoms
- Eat regularly even if you're not hungry — altitude suppresses appetite but your body still needs fuel
Don't:
- Carry non-vegetarian food or alcohol — strictly not permitted during the Yatra
- Photograph inside temple sanctums unless you can see it's explicitly permitted
- Litter on any route, helipad, or near any temple — carry your waste
- Rush at Yamunotri even though you have VIP access — the pony ride and some walking are still involved. Take your time
- Try to book Rudra Abhishek at Kedarnath or Maha Abhishek at Badrinath on the spot — these fill up fast and require advance arrangements. Ask Udan Aviation about coordinating these when you book
