Best Time to Visit Kedarnath Dham

The best time to visit Kedarnath Dham is from May to June and September to October.

Summers: The summers in the mountainous region last from May to June. The weather is pleasant by day and the skies are mostly clear, which is ideal for the pilgrimage and for flying. This is the peak season, and most people book their Kedarnath Yatra by helicopter for these months, so seats fill early. Helicopter services stop once the monsoon sets in, usually by late June.

Off-monsoon Period: This period ranges from mid-September to October. During this time, you’ll find Kedarnath Dham covered in greenery, thanks to the monsoon that has just ended. The crowd is thinner and the skies are clear. Nights are much colder.

Monsoon and Winter: These two seasons are from July to August and November to April, respectively. The monsoon brings heavy rainfall, landslides and road blockages, and helicopter services stay suspended. In 2026, flights stopped on 25 June and resumed on 15 September. In winter, the shrine is closed due to heavy snow. It opened on 22 April 2026 and closes on Bhai Dooj in November. BKTC announces the exact closing date around Vijayadashami. These periods are not suitable for Kedarnath helicopter booking.

Online Kedarnath Helicopter Booking Guide 2026

Shuttle helicopter tickets from Phata, Sersi and Guptkashi to Kedarnath are sold only on the official IRCTC portal. If you book our Dehradun package, we arrange the shuttle for you. If you plan to reach a base helipad by road and book the shuttle yourself, follow the procedure given below:

  • Step 1: Before you book a helicopter, register for the Kedarnath Yatra at the official Uttarakhand government portal. This is free of cost and mandatory for every pilgrim. You’ll receive a unique Yatra Registration Number.
  • Step 2: After your registration, proceed to book your helicopter on the IRCTC HeliYatra Portal, the only official booking site.
  • Step 3: Sign up with your mobile number and email ID if you’re a new user, then log in with the same credentials.
  • Step 4: Enter your Yatra Registration Number, then choose your travel date and the helipad from Phata, Sersi and Guptkashi.
  • Step 5: Make the payment online through UPI, debit card or credit card.
  • Step 6: After successful payment, your e-ticket is generated. Download and print it, and carry it with the original ID used for booking. It is checked at the helipad.

Health Advisory

Kedarnath Dham is located at a high altitude of about 3,583 metres (11,755 feet). At such heights, there’s less oxygen and pilgrims often face altitude-related sickness. Helicopter passengers reach this height within an hour and get no time to acclimatise, so walk slowly and take breaks. Pilgrims with heart, lung or blood pressure conditions, and pregnant women, should consult a doctor before booking. Here are a few high-altitude ailments that you need to be aware of:

AMS (Acute Mountain Sickness)

This is the most common type of sickness the pilgrims undergo. Once you start ascending above 2,500 metres, signs of AMS start appearing. Some common symptoms include:

  • Nausea
  • Vomiting
  • Fatigue
  • Loss of Appetite
  • Weakness
  • Difficulty Sleeping
  • Dizziness
  • Headache

High Altitude Cerebral Edema (HACE)

This is a severe progression of AMS, caused by swelling of the brain tissue. It needs immediate descent and medical attention. The warning signs are:

  • Confusion or disorientation
  • Loss of balance or coordination while walking
  • Unusual drowsiness

High Altitude Pulmonary Edema (HAPE)

This is a build-up of fluid in the lungs. It usually develops over one to two days at high altitude and can progress to respiratory distress, so descent is urgent. Common symptoms include:

  • Shortness of breath on exertion, later even at rest
  • Persistent cough
  • Weakness and reduced stamina
  • Chest congestion or tightness
  • Blood-stained sputum in the advanced stage

Do’s and Don’ts at High Altitudes

The temperature and air pressure at a high-altitude location are very different from what we are used to, and special conditions call for special precautions. Keep the following do’s and don’ts in mind at Kedarnath.

  • Take a palki service when you feel tired.
  • Take breaks intermittently and catch your breath.
  • Check if you have symptoms like nausea, vomiting, headache or loss of appetite. If you do, inform our staff and contact the health care centre.
  • Wear comfortable clothes, like a tracksuit, and sports shoes with good grip.
  • Carry energy bars and other high-carbohydrate snacks to keep your energy up.
  • Keep your ID proof documents with you like Aadhaar Card.
  • Apply sunscreen to prevent sun damage.

  • Don’t exert too much. Proceed at a pace you’re comfortable with.
  • Don’t stop at places that have warning signs.
  • Don’t wear slippers for the walk to the temple.
  • Do not wander off alone. Stay with your group so that someone can call for help if needed.

What to Wear

If you undertake the Kedarnath Yatra by helicopter in May and June, you’ll usually get sunny weather. Even so, Kedarnath stays cold. Daytime temperatures are around 5 to 20 degrees Celsius and nights fall close to freezing. Light summer clothes are fine for Dehradun, but carry a warm jacket, cap and gloves for the temple.

If you’re visiting during September and October, you’ll experience cool and pleasant days, with temperatures often dropping below zero at night. Pack heavier warm layers, and keep a light raincoat handy in every season.

Weight Limit, Baggage and Documents

  • Passenger weight: The helicopter carries up to 6 passengers with a combined weight limit of 450 kg. The standard allowance is 75 kg per passenger, and heavier passengers pay an extra charge.
  • Weighing: Every passenger is weighed at the helipad, so share accurate weights at the time of booking. A group may be split between two shuttle flights to balance the load.
  • Baggage: One soft bag of up to 5 kg per person. Leave the rest of your luggage at your Dehradun hotel.
  • Documents: Original photo ID such as Aadhaar Card or passport, and the Yatra registration slip. Senior citizens and passengers with a medical condition should also carry a doctor’s fitness certificate.
  • Reaching the helipad: Sahastradhara Helipad is about 12 km from Dehradun railway station and about 36 km from Jolly Grant Airport. Arrive in Dehradun a day early.

Terms and Conditions

  • Only one carry bag is allowed per person on the helicopter flight. It can weigh up to 5 kg. We’ll provide duffel bags, as big luggage is not allowed because of limited space in the helicopter.
  • There’s no concession in helicopter tickets for children and senior citizens. Infants (below 2 years of age) can travel free of cost, but their parents need to produce the birth certificate as proof of age.
  • The passenger needs to make the full payment at least 30 days before the tour commences.
  • If a customer reschedules their travel date, we’ll cancel the current booking and book a new one, subject to availability of dates.
  • If we can’t complete your journey due to bad weather or other unavoidable conditions, we’ll attempt it on the next day. If even that can’t be done, we’ll refund the unutilized amount as per our refund policy.
  • All tour cancellations must be made at least 15 days before the journey. If you cancel 20 days or more before the tour, we’ll refund 50% of the booking amount. If you cancel 15 to 19 days before, we’ll return 25% of the amount. No refund is given after that.
  • All extra expenses, such as tips and any food or beverages beyond the meals agreed at booking, will be borne by the customer.
  • The Kedarnath trip follows the fixed itinerary, and pilgrims have to comply with it.
  • If the itinerary is modified due to bad weather or unforeseeable conditions, the company cannot be held liable.
  • If for any reason the stay is extended, then the extra cost will have to be borne by the passenger.

Authorized Helicopter Companies for the Kedarnath Shuttle (2026)

The shuttle flights between the base helipads and Kedarnath are run by operators selected by the Uttarakhand Civil Aviation Development Authority (UCADA). As reported after the April 2026 tender, the operators are:

History of Kedarnath Temple

The Kedarnath temple has ancient origins, and the precise date of its construction is not known. It’s believed that it was built by the Pandavas during the Dwapara Yuga to atone for their sins in the Kurukshetra war.

In the 8th century, the shrine is believed to have been revived by the philosopher and saint Adi Shankaracharya. His Samadhi is located just behind the main temple.

Legend

As per the legend, Lord Shiva disguised himself as a bull in order to avoid the Pandavas, but Bhim tried to catch the bull. After being chased for a while, Lord Shiva disappeared into the ground, and parts of his body surfaced at different places. The hump of the bull appeared at Kedarnath. The other parts emerged at Tungnath, Rudranath, Madhyamaheshwar and Kalpeshwar, and together the five are known as the Panch Kedar temples.

Top Things to Do on Your Kedarnath Dham Yatra

On a same-day helicopter trip you usually get about two hours at Kedarnath, and the Darshan queue can take up much of it. Plan around Darshan first. Here is how to use the time:

1. Seek Blessings at Kedarnath Temple

Visit the main Kedarnath shrine and offer your prayers to Lord Shiva. Take a few quiet minutes in the temple courtyard after Darshan.

2. Attend Temple Rituals

Take part in the rituals of the temple to feel more connected with the divine. Special pujas such as Abhishek and Rudrabhishek are booked through the temple committee (BKTC) and charged separately. The evening Aarti can be attended only if you stay overnight at Kedarnath.

3. Witness Scenic Beauty

Kedarnath is surrounded by lofty snow peaks, with the Mandakini River flowing below the temple town. Keep your camera ready outside the temple. Photography is not allowed inside the shrine.

4. Shop for Souvenirs

The stalls near the temple sell Rudraksha beads, woollen garments, Shiva idols, Prasad, religious books, and prayer items like incense and Dhoop.

1. Bhairavnath Temple

A short but steep walk uphill from the Kedarnath Temple lies the shrine dedicated to the guardian deity of Kedarnath, Lord Bhairavnath. From here you get a wide view of the valley and the temple town. Attempt it only if you feel well and have time before your return flight.

2. Shankaracharya Samadhi

Located just behind the main Kedarnath Temple, this memorial is dedicated to Adi Shankaracharya, the saint who is believed to have revived the Kedarnath shrine.
