This is the question we receive more than almost any other at Udan Aviation.
“Should we book the government IRCTC helicopter or a private operator for Chardham Yatra?”
It is a genuinely important question — and most articles written about it are produced either by people who have never actually operated a Chardham helicopter service, or by operators with an obvious commercial interest in steering you one way.
I am Rashmi Negi — Founder of Udan Aviation, an ISO-certified private Chardham helicopter operator based at Sahastradhara Helipad, Dehradun. I have 16 years of experience in India’s pilgrimage tourism and aviation industry. I have an obvious commercial interest in private helicopter services — and I am going to tell you honestly when the government option is the better choice for your situation.
Because for some pilgrims, it genuinely is.

First — Understand What Each Service Actually Is
Before comparing, you need to understand that these are fundamentally different products serving different needs. Most pilgrims confuse them — and that confusion is the root of most booking mistakes.
What the Government IRCTC Helicopter Service Is
The IRCTC HeliYatra service at heliyatra.irctc.co.in is the official government helicopter shuttle service operating specifically for Kedarnath Dham.
The key word is shuttle. The IRCTC service is a point-to-point shuttle — it flies pilgrims from one of three helipads (Phata, Sirsi, or Guptkashi) to Kedarnath helipad and back on the same day or next day. That is it. Nothing more.
Companies operating the government helicopter service include Pawan Hans, Himalayan Heli, Trans Bharat, Arrow Aviation, Thumbi Aviation, Chipsan, and Rajas Pilgrimage. Helicopter services for 2026 are booked only through the official IRCTC website.
What IRCTC covers:
- Kedarnath only — not all 4 Dhams
- Shuttle flight from Phata, Sirsi, or Guptkashi to Kedarnath helipad and return
- Same-day or next day return ticket only
- Flight time approximately 5 to 15 minutes each way
What IRCTC does not cover:
- Yamunotri, Gangotri, or Badrinath
- Hotel accommodation
- Meals
- Ground transfers
- VIP Darshan arrangements
- Dedicated coordinator
- Any pilgrimage support beyond the flight itself
What a Private Chardham Helicopter Package Is
A private Chardham helicopter package — like those offered by Udan Aviation — is a fully managed end-to-end pilgrimage service covering all 4 Dhams over 6 days. It is not a shuttle. It is a complete journey from arrival in Dehradun to safe return — with helicopters, hotels, meals, VIP Darshan, coordinators, and ground transfers all managed by one operator.
These are two completely different products. Comparing them purely on price — without understanding what each includes — is like comparing a flight ticket to a fully managed holiday package. The numbers look similar but the products are not remotely the same.

The IRCTC Government Helicopter — When It Makes Sense
I said I would be honest about when government is the better option. Here are the situations where IRCTC genuinely serves pilgrims better:
Situation 1 — You Only Want Kedarnath, Not All 4 Dhams
If your pilgrimage goal is specifically and only Kedarnath — you have already visited Badrinath, Yamunotri, and Gangotri separately, or you simply want this one Jyotirlinga — then the IRCTC shuttle makes complete sense. At ₹8,842 to ₹11,000 per person for the Kedarnath shuttle, you reach the temple and return the same day. You arrange a car from either Haridwar, Rishikesh, Dehradun or your hometown. You arrange your own hotel in Guptkashi or Phata the night before. You manage your own meals. The flight itself is the same helicopter in the same Himalayan air.
For this specific situation, paying ₹90,000 for a private same-day Kedarnath package when the IRCTC shuttle costs ₹8,842 would be unnecessary — unless you specifically want the coordinator support, boarding assistance, and VIP Darshan that private packages include.
Situation 2 — You Are Young, Physically Fit, and Travelling Solo or as a Couple
IRCTC allows individual bookings. Private operators may have minimum 2-person requirements.
If you are physically fit, experienced at Himalayan travel, comfortable navigating the booking process independently, and specifically want only Kedarnath — the IRCTC shuttle is a genuine option. You arrange your own transport to Phata or Guptkashi, book the IRCTC ticket online, fly to Kedarnath, complete your Darshan, and return.
Situation 3 — Budget Is the Primary Constraint
The IRCTC Kedarnath shuttle at ₹8,842 is significantly cheaper than any private package option. If budget is genuinely the binding constraint — and you understand exactly what is not included — the government shuttle is honest value for the flight component alone.
The Private Package — When It Is the Only Realistic Option
Situation 1 — You Want All 4 Dhams
This is the most important point in this entire article.
The IRCTC government service covers Kedarnath only. There is no government helicopter service covering all 4 Dhams — Yamunotri, Gangotri, Kedarnath, and Badrinath — in a single managed circuit. This simply does not exist as a government offering.
If your goal is the complete Chardham Yatra — all 4 Dhams — a private operator is your only helicopter option. Full stop.
Situation 2 — You Are Booking for Elderly Parents or Senior Citizens
Yes, the flight itself is safe for most seniors. However, even at the Kedarnath temple area at 3,583 metres, altitude can cause breathlessness. A medical fitness check is strongly advised before booking.
The IRCTC government shuttle provides the helicopter flight. It does not provide boarding assistance at the helipad, altitude health guidance, a coordinator who knows your parents’ health conditions, or a named person reachable by WhatsApp throughout the journey. For an elderly pilgrim travelling with health conditions — the flight is only one component of what they need. The support infrastructure around the flight is equally important.
A 75-year-old pilgrim arriving at Guptkashi the day before an IRCTC shuttle flight needs to manage their own hotel booking, their own meals, their own transport to the helipad at 5 AM, and their own navigation through the helipad check-in process — with no dedicated support person. For most elderly pilgrims, this is simply not realistic.
Situation 3 — You Are an NRI Family Booking From Abroad
The IRCTC HeliYatra booking portal requires a verified Indian mobile number as your Booker ID. Without this, you cannot proceed with booking.
Every traveler must secure a Yatra Registration Number through the Tourist Safety Management System operated by the Uttarakhand Tourism Development Board. Without this unique ID, the HeliYatra portal will reject your booking attempt at the login screen.
For NRI families booking from the USA, UK, Canada, UAE, or Australia — the IRCTC booking process is genuinely difficult. It requires an Indian mobile number, the Chardham registration must be completed first, and the booking window is extremely competitive. Seats vanish within minutes of release. The booking window is extremely competitive.
Private operators like Udan Aviation handle all of this — registration assistance, WhatsApp coordination across time zones, international payment options, and complete documentation — as part of the standard booking process.
Situation 4 — You Want VIP Darshan at Every Temple
The general queue at Kedarnath during peak season can take 6 to 8 hours. At Badrinath, 4 to 6 hours. VIP Darshan gives your family priority access to the sanctum within 20 to 40 minutes.
The IRCTC shuttle delivers you to the Kedarnath helipad. From there, you join the general queue — which can mean a 6-hour wait at 3,583 metres altitude for an elderly pilgrim who just completed a helicopter flight specifically to avoid physical strain.
VIP Darshan arrangements at all 4 Dhams are included in Udan Aviation’s complete Chardham package. The IRCTC shuttle does not include this — or any Darshan arrangement.
The Booking Process — How Different They Actually Are
Booking the IRCTC Government Shuttle
If you have ever booked a high-demand IRCTC railway ticket, the experience is similar. Seats vanish within minutes of release. Never attempt account creation on launch day — server congestion will eat your time. Go to the portal, verify your email, and authenticate your mobile number via OTP. Your verified mobile number becomes your permanent Booker ID.
Helicopter ticket bookings opened on 15th April 2026 at 12:00 Noon for journeys from April 22nd to June 15th 2026. Chardham Yatra Registration is mandatory for booking helicopter services.
The process:

- Create account at heliyatra.irctc.co.in using Indian mobile number
- Be online exactly when booking window opens
- Complete booking before seats sell out — often within minutes
- Manage your own travel to the Reach helipad (Phata, Sirsi, or Guptkashi)
- Manage your own accommodation the night before

Price — The Complete Picture
This is where most comparisons mislead pilgrims by comparing numbers without context.
| Item | IRCTC Shuttle (Kedarnath only) | Udan Aviation (Complete Chardham) |
| Helicopter ticket | ₹8,842 to ₹11,000 | Included in package |
| Accommodation — 5 nights | ₹5,000 to ₹15,000 (separate) | Included |
| All meals | ₹3,000 to ₹6,000 (separate) | Included |
| VIP Darshan | Not available | Included — all 4 Dhams |
| Transport to Reach helipad | From Haridwar -₹16,000 to ₹20,000 | Included from Dehradun |
| Coordinator support | Not available | Included — named person |
| Emergency oxygen | Not standard | Included standard |
| Yamunotri, Gangotri, Badrinath | Not covered | Included — all 3 |
| Realistic total for Kedarnath only | ₹38,000 to ₹40,000 | N/A |
| Complete Chardham all-inclusive | Not available | ₹2,30,000 |
The IRCTC shuttle is genuinely cheaper for Kedarnath alone — even after adding your own accommodation and meals. That is an honest statement. But it covers one Dham, not four. And it provides no support infrastructure around the flight itself.
The Safety Question — Is One Safer Than the Other?
Both use DGCA-licensed aviation companies with commercially certified pilots. The helicopters are the same types — Bell 407, AS350 B3 — operated by the same companies that work with both government and private operators.
Companies operating helicopter services include Pawan Hans, Himalayan Heli, Trans Bharat, Arrow Aviation, Thumbi Aviation, Castle Aviation, and Aero Air Craft.
The flight safety is equivalent. Where private operators differentiate is in the ground safety protocols — pre-flight health briefings, emergency oxygen provision, first-aid trained coordinators, and weather delay management processes.
At Udan Aviation, our ISO quality management certification covers the entire service delivery process — not just the flight. Our zero safety-incident record across 3,000+ pilgrims reflects our ground protocols as much as our aviation standards.
The Scam Warning — Critical for IRCTC Bookings
This cannot be overstated. The government Kedarnath helicopter shuttle service is booked exclusively through IRCTC’s official portal at heliyatra.irctc.co.in. No private agent is authorised to sell these tickets. Anyone offering them through any other channel is operating a scam.
If anyone contacts you — by WhatsApp, by phone, through a website, through a travel agent — claiming to sell IRCTC Kedarnath helicopter tickets, they are running a fraud. Every time. Without exception.
For the complete Chardham 4-Dham package — this is a different product, legitimately sold by private operators. But verify the operator using the steps in our scam awareness guide before paying anything.
The Honest Recommendation — Based on Your Situation
Choose IRCTC government shuttle if:
- You want Kedarnath only — not all 4 Dhams
- You are young and physically fit
- You are comfortable with competitive online booking
- You have an Indian mobile number
- You are managing your own accommodation and meals
- Budget is the primary constraint
Choose a private package if:
- You want all 4 Dhams — Chardham or Do Dham
- You are booking for elderly parents or senior citizens
- You are an NRI family booking from abroad
- You want VIP Darshan at every temple
- You need a dedicated coordinator throughout the journey
- You want complete end-to-end management with no logistics to handle yourself
Frequently Asked Questions
Q-1: Can I do the complete Chardham Yatra by government helicopter?
Ans: No. The government IRCTC helicopter service covers Kedarnath only. There is no government helicopter service for the complete Chardham circuit — Yamunotri, Gangotri, Kedarnath, and Badrinath. For all 4 Dhams by helicopter, a private licensed operator is your only option.
Q-2: What is the price of IRCTC Kedarnath helicopter in 2026?

Q-3: Is the IRCTC government helicopter safe?
Ans: Yes. The aviation companies operating IRCTC shuttle flights are DGCA-licensed. The helicopters are the same types used by private operators. Flight safety is equivalent across both.
Q-4: Can NRI families book IRCTC government helicopter from abroad?
Ans: It is difficult. The IRCTC HeliYatra portal requires a verified Indian mobile number as the Booker ID. NRI families typically find private operators significantly easier to book with — we handle all documentation, registration assistance, and accept international payments.
Q-5: Does IRCTC helicopter include VIP Darshan?
Ans: No. The IRCTC service is a shuttle flight only. VIP Darshan arrangements are not included. At peak season, the general queue at Kedarnath can take 6 to 8 hours.
Q-6: Which is better — government or private helicopter for Chardham?
Ans: Neither is universally better. Government is better for Kedarnath-only, budget-conscious, physically fit, independent travellers. Private is better for complete Chardham Yatra, elderly pilgrims, NRI families, and anyone who wants end-to-end management including VIP Darshan, hotels, meals, and a dedicated coordinator.
Q-7: How do I book private Chardham helicopter with Udan Aviation?
Ans: WhatsApp or call +91 93104 19931. Tell us your travel dates and who is travelling. We send a complete written package breakdown before any payment is requested.
