Operational Model

What Udan Aviation Does — And What the Operator Does

Udan Aviation is a journey coordination operator. We handle everything around your yatra — except flying the helicopter. Aircraft operations are handled by DGCA-authorized helicopter operating organisations.

Udan Aviation Coordinates
Passenger communication and journey briefing. Ground logistics and private vehicle transfers. Hotel accommodation booking at each stopover. VIP darshan arrangements and priority passes. Pony and palki services at Yamunotri. Weather-delay coordination and rebooking. Meal arrangements (all-inclusive). Medical support coordination for senior travellers. NRI travel logistics from international airports.
Authorized Operator Handles
Aircraft operations, airworthiness, and maintenance. Pilot deployment and licensing compliance. In-flight safety and emergency procedures. Weight and payload calculations. Flight-route and weather-based go/no-go decisions. Helipad ground operations. DGCA regulatory compliance for all flight operations.
Transparency Disclosure

Udan Aviation does not own, operate, or maintain aircraft unless specifically documented in a separate agreement. All airworthiness, maintenance, pilot licensing, and operational control remain with the authorized operating organisation. This distinction is important and we are transparent about it.

Fleet Specifications

Aircraft Used on the Chardham Circuit

The following helicopter types are deployed by our authorized operating partners for Chardham yatra operations. Both are certified for high-altitude Himalayan terrain above 3,500 metres.

Primary Aircraft
Airbus H125 (Eurocopter AS350 B3)
Single-engine turbine helicopter. High-altitude certified for operations above 3,500m. The H125 is the workhorse of Himalayan helicopter operations — its Arriel 2D engine delivers reliable performance in the thin air and variable conditions of the Chardham circuit.
Secondary Aircraft
Bell 407
Single-engine turbine helicopter. Suitable for mountain operations. The Bell 407's Rolls-Royce 250-C47B/8 engine provides strong high-altitude power margins, and its wider cabin offers slightly more passenger comfort on longer segments.
Specification Detail
Passenger Capacity6 passengers + 1 crew per aircraft
Combined Payload450 kg maximum (passengers + baggage)
Per-Passenger Reference75 kg (operational planning reference; surcharge of ₹2,500/kg if exceeded)
Baggage Allowance5 kg soft duffel per passenger. Hard suitcases prohibited.
Flight Duration30–45 minutes per segment
Operational CeilingAbove 3,500m (Kedarnath helipad at 3,586m)
The 75 kg figure is an operational planning reference used for weight-and-balance calculations. Helicopter performance depends on passenger load, fuel, temperature, altitude, and available payload. Exact procedures are determined by the operating operator for each flight.

Operating Season

When We Operate

Primary Season
April – June
Pre-monsoon season. Peak pilgrim demand. Weather generally stable with occasional disruptions in late June as monsoon approaches.
Post-Monsoon Season
September – October
Post-monsoon resumption after DGCA re-approval. Clearer skies, smaller crowds, colder temperatures at altitude.
Daily Operations Window
06:30 AM – 05:00 PM
All flights follow DGCA Day Visual Flight Rules (VFR). Operations are forbidden before official sunrise and after sunset. No night flying.
Monsoon Suspension
July – August
All Chardham helicopter operations are suspended during the monsoon. DGCA grants fresh approval for post-monsoon resumption after weather and infrastructure assessment.
Weather Protocols

How Weather Decisions Are Made

Himalayan weather changes rapidly. A helicopter departure is not treated as a guaranteed schedule. Safety takes priority over schedule — always.

Weather Assessment
Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) personnel are permanently stationed at primary helipads including Sahastradhara and Sirsi. They provide real-time weather data — visibility, wind speed, cloud cover, precipitation — to the helicopter operator before each flight decision.
Operational Assessment
The authorized helicopter operator evaluates IMD data against aircraft performance parameters, route conditions, and payload for each specific flight. 30+ surveillance cameras are deployed along primary flight corridors for real-time visual assessment.
Pilot Decision
The pilot-in-command has final authority on every flight. No external pressure — commercial, scheduling, or passenger — overrides the pilot's go/no-go decision. Pilots must have minimum 1,500 hours of documented hill-flying experience.
Valley-Wide Call-Off
A Valley-Wide Weather Call-Off procedure enables simultaneous grounding of all aircraft across the Chardham circuit when conditions deteriorate. This is a system-level safety mechanism, not a per-flight decision.
Passenger Coordination
Udan Aviation communicates operational updates to passengers, coordinates applicable accommodation if grounded, arranges alternative ground transport where possible, and informs passengers of revised timing. Udan does not override the operator's flight-safety decisions.
Weather-Delay Policy
If grounded due to weather, Udan Aviation coordinates accommodation and meals for the duration. Ground arrangements are provided where included in the package. A full refund is issued after 5 consecutive weather-grounded days. Weather-related delays, holding, route changes, or cancellations are inherent to Himalayan helicopter operations and can occur on any sector.
Passenger Safety

Pre-Flight Safety Briefing

Every passenger receives a mandatory safety briefing before departure. These are the standard procedures followed on all Chardham helicopter flights.

1
Fasten seatbelts as instructed by the crew. Keep them fastened throughout the flight.
2
Follow crew instructions during boarding and deboarding. Approach the aircraft only when directed.
3
Do not approach the helicopter without authorization. The rotor area is dangerous even when the aircraft appears to be idle.
4
Follow helipad ground staff instructions at all times. Helipads at altitude have specific approach and exit paths.
5
Listen to the emergency procedures briefing before every departure. Each aircraft type has specific evacuation procedures.
6
Follow baggage and weight instructions precisely. Overweight loads affect helicopter performance at high altitude.
High-Altitude Health Guidance
Chardham shrines are at significant altitude — Kedarnath at 3,586m. Discuss high-altitude travel with your doctor before booking. Do not ignore headache, unusual breathlessness, dizziness, confusion, or significant physical deterioration. Inform ground and medical support immediately if unwell. Follow professional medical advice. This guidance is especially important for senior travellers and those with cardiac or respiratory conditions.
Reporting Requirements
Check in 30 minutes before your scheduled departure. Late arrivals are recorded as no-show with no refund or rescheduling. Day 1 of the itinerary is arrival, hotel check-in, and an evening operational briefing. Flight operations begin Day 2. Mandatory Uttarakhand government Yatra registration (biometric e-pass) must be completed before travel.
