Get physically ready \u2014 and mean it.<\/strong> The Kedarnath trek is 16 km at 3,583 metres. It’s not a casual walk. Start daily walking of at least 5 km about a month before your trip. Use stairs instead of lifts. Light jogging and yoga help too. Pilgrims who aren’t physically prepared often have to turn back mid-trail \u2014 and that’s a genuinely disappointing experience after travelling so far.<\/p>\nPick your season carefully.<\/strong> May\u2013June is peak season \u2014 full facilities, open roads, but heavy crowds everywhere. September\u2013October is the sweet spot \u2014 fewer pilgrims, clear skies, snow-capped peaks in full view. July\u2013August should be avoided if possible. Heavy rains and landslides are frequent during this period, and roads can close without notice.<\/p>\nPack smart, not heavy.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n- Warm layers \u2014 nights above 3,000 metres get cold even in May<\/li>\n
- Comfortable, worn-in trekking shoes \u2014 never attempt the trek in new shoes<\/li>\n
- Raincoat or compact poncho \u2014 always<\/li>\n
- Personal medicines plus a basic first aid kit<\/li>\n
- Power bank \u2014 charging points are limited on the route<\/li>\n
- Offline maps downloaded before you leave \u2014 mobile networks disappear frequently in the mountains<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n
Take altitude seriously.<\/strong> Kedarnath at 3,583 m and Badrinath at 3,133 m are both high enough to cause altitude sickness in unprepared people. Don’t overexert on Day 1. If you feel breathlessness, headache, or nausea \u2014 rest immediately, don’t push through it. Spending a night in Uttarkashi before Gangotri, or in Joshimath before Badrinath, genuinely helps your body adjust.<\/p>\nRespect the place.<\/strong> Char Dham Yatra is a deeply sacred circuit. Dress modestly at all temples \u2014 shoulders and knees covered for both men and women. Follow temple rules. Don’t litter. The Himalayas belong to everyone who comes after you.<\/p>\n<\/span>Safety Rules<\/span><\/h2>\n<\/span>Do’s<\/span><\/h3>\n\n- Walk slowly on the trek.<\/strong> Speed increases altitude sickness risk. There’s no prize for finishing first.<\/li>\n
- Hire an experienced hill driver.<\/strong> Mountain roads \u2014 especially the Barkot and Gaurikund stretches \u2014 require someone who knows them well.<\/li>\n
- Keep energy up on the trek.<\/strong> Water with a pinch of sugar and salt works surprisingly well for sustained energy \u2014 better than most commercial drinks.<\/li>\n
- Carry a first aid kit and a walking stick.<\/strong> Especially important for the Kedarnath trail.<\/li>\n
- Carry cash after Rishikesh.<\/strong> Cards and UPI are unreliable beyond this point. Withdraw cash at Rishikesh or Uttarkashi \u2014 ATMs further up are not dependable.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n
<\/span>Don’ts<\/span><\/h3>\n\n- Don’t store petrol, gas, or kerosene in your vehicle.<\/strong> On mountain roads, this is a serious safety hazard.<\/li>\n
- Don’t take shortcuts on the trek.<\/strong> Even if a local suggests a faster trail \u2014 stick to the approved route. Unauthorized paths carry landslide and navigation risks.<\/li>\n
- Don’t trek alone.<\/strong> Never separate from your group on the trail. Solo walking in hilly terrain can go wrong quickly.<\/li>\n
- Don’t board unregistered vehicles.<\/strong> Travel with recognized operators or official government transport only.<\/li>\n
- Don’t drive after 7 PM on mountain roads.<\/strong> Night driving on the Rishikesh\u2013Badrinath or Uttarkashi stretch is dangerous. Plan your halts accordingly.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n
