Note on the Closing Date:<\/b> The closing date is announced based on the Vedic lunar calendar \u2014 typically around Bhai Dooj (two days after Diwali). The 13th November date is the current tentative date. Significance of Badrinath Temple Opening and Closing<\/strong><\/h2>\n

The Badrinath Temple was established and systematised by <\/span>Adi Shankaracharya<\/b> in the 8th century CE. He also instituted the tradition of the Rawal \u2014 the head priest of Badrinath \u2014 being from the Namboodiri Brahmin community of Kerala. This practice continues to this day.<\/span><\/p>\n

The temple is situated at <\/span>3,133 metres<\/b> in the Garhwal Himalayas of Uttarakhand, on the banks of the Alaknanda River. It is one of the four Char Dhams and one of the 108 Divya Desams \u2014 the most sacred Vishnu shrines in the Vaishnava tradition.<\/span><\/p>\n

The seasonal opening and closing exist for a simple reason: Badrinath receives heavy snowfall from November to April. The temple premises, including the access roads, are completely snowbound and inaccessible during winter. The idol is moved to Joshimath (44 km from Badrinath) for the winter months to ensure uninterrupted worship.<\/span><\/p>\n
